Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam

Ponram's 2013 Tamil film follows Bosepandi, unemployed and living in a village near Madurai. He and his friend cause constant trouble; when he falls for the village chief's daughter he has to put his own life in order to marry her. The film became one of the most watched examples of Tamil rural comedy and made Sivakarthikeyan's career. The humour works largely through speech, timing and the double act with Soori. D. Imman's music was among the most popular albums of its period. Its weakness is the story returning in the second half to the template of winning family approval, and leaving the woman character as a function. Who it's for: viewers who like Tamil rural comedy and Sivakarthikeyan's work. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a story outside the template, or viewers who cannot follow humour based on local speech.
