What Vazhakku Enn 18/9 Is About
Velu, who works in a roadside shop in Chennai, is taken with Jyothi, a maid in the apartment block opposite, and tries to tell her so. In the same block are Dinesh, a student, and Aarthy, who has fallen for him; the young man films her private moments on his phone without her knowledge, and when those images come out lives are overturned. An accident and an investigation bring the paths of four young people together, and who is blamed depends on where each of them stands. Balaji Sakthivel’s hundred and fifteen minute Tamil film was shot with unknown performers in a style close to documentary and puts the divide of class and of gender at the centre of the case. It was completed in 2012.
