Vikram Vedha

Vikram, a policeman known for his integrity, is hunting the gangster Vedha when the man walks into the station of his own accord and offers to tell him a story. Each story ends in a question, and each question breaks something Vikram was sure of. Pushkar and Gayathri build the film on the Indian folk cycle of Vikram and Betaal, in which a king carrying a corpse is tested with questions he cannot answer. R. Madhavan plays the policeman and Vijay Sethupathi plays Vedha, and all the tension is in their scenes together. There is action, and the film is essentially a moral puzzle. The structure was later remade in Hindi cinema. Who it is for: viewers who like Tamil crime cinema and stories nested inside stories. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a clear moral conclusion, which the film deliberately withholds.
