Tommaso Puzzilli grew up in Pietralata, on the outer edge of Rome. He has no work, and he and his friends find their way to money through crime. The film was adapted from Pier Paolo Pasolini’s novel of the same name, published by Garzanti in 1959, which reached the final of the Strega Prize that year and lost to Lampedusa’s The Leopard. Pasolini wrote the story for the film, and the screenplay came from Paolo Heusch, Brunello Rondi and Franco Solinas. Heusch was a Roman documentarian, and Rondi, one of Fellini’s screenwriters, was directing for the first time. Franco Citti plays Tommaso, with Serena Vergano opposite him.
