Violent

Andrew Huculiak's 2015 film was made in Norway, in Norwegian, by a Canadian team. A young woman recalls five people from her life during an event that turns catastrophic. The film presents those five memories as separate chapters. Behind the production is the band We Are the City; they wrote the music and the director is one of its members. That shaped the form: the scenes are built like tracks on an album, each chapter with its own tone and colour. The music never stands in front of the narrative but is always running. The cinematography uses the Norwegian landscape: fjords, rain and grey sky. The film was recognised at festivals particularly for its visual work. Some viewers found the narrative structure too fragmented. Who it's for: those who like films built visually and musically with a loose narrative. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a story whose connections are clearly drawn; the film does not explain the relationship between its chapters.
