What Violette Is About

Violette Leduc was born outside marriage and carried it like a wound for the rest of her life. In postwar Saint-Germain-des-Prés she seeks out Simone de Beauvoir, and what forms between them lasts a lifetime and is never equal: Leduc trying to write her way into freedom, Beauvoir convinced she is holding the fate of an extraordinary writer and pushing, shielding and steering her accordingly. Martin Provost follows the years in which Leduc went unpublished, censored and overlooked, up to the success that arrived in 1964 with La Bâtarde. Emmanuelle Devos plays Violette, Sandrine Kiberlain plays Beauvoir.
