On New Year’s Eve a man kills his wife and his son, then goes and gives himself up to the police. Vito, the only child left alive, is placed with relatives who were meant to protect him and is abused there instead. With nobody looking after him he grows up on the street, and along with his friends he falls into drugs, prostitution and petty crime. The film takes place in the back streets of Naples and shows these children neither as innocents waiting to be saved nor as criminals by birth; what it really asks is why there is nobody at all around them. Antonio Capuano’s eighty three minute Italian film was completed in 1991.
