Vodka Lemon

A Yazidi Kurdish village in the mountains of Armenia. Since the Soviet Union came apart there is no work and no money there. Hamo is a widower whose pension covers nothing and whose three sons are no use. Every day he goes to his wife's grave. There he sees Nina, who comes to her husband's. Nina works at a nearby bar that is about to close. Hamo is selling the contents of his house piece by piece. The two of them start talking, and something nobody expected happens. Hiner Saleem directs; eighty-seven minutes, shot in Armenian. He is an Iraqi Kurd, and he made the film in Armenia, in the snow. The title comes from the only drink the village bar sells. It won a prize at Venice in 2003.
