What Walking Too Fast Is About
In Czechoslovakia during the Cold War, a ruthless secret service officer begins to develop an obsession with the girlfriend of a suspected dissident he is tracking. For a man with the authority to watch people, that obsession easily turns into an instrument of power, and he loses his own balance. The film is about how a totalitarian order tears apart not only the watched but the watcher. The account draws its tension from atmosphere rather than incident and gives nobody a way out. The account also shows the man at his work: keeping files, listening in and writing reports. The violence here moves not through explosions but on paper. Ondrej Maly plays the lead in Radim Spacek’s hundred and forty minute Czech film, completed in 2010.
