What Walking with the Enemy Is About
Hungary in 1944. When Regent Horthy's balancing act with Germany collapses, the country is occupied and Hungarian Jews are moved into ghettos and then towards the camps. Elek, cut off from his family, decides the only way to get near the machinery is to wear the enemy's uniform. The film draws on the real story of Pinchas Tibor Rosenbaum, a rabbi's son who saved thousands by passing himself off in the uniform of the Arrow Cross, the Hungarian fascist party, rather than the German army. Ben Kingsley plays Horthy. It is inspired by events rather than a record of them.
