What Wanted Is About
Thomas Reiter, a trauma surgeon, withdraws of his own will into a closed institution because he no longer wants to face daily life. He solves his problems there, inside a western he has built in his head. His worried parents send a priest to bring their son back to reality. Thomas invites the priest into his western world as well. The priest finds that this escape is not without its pull. The film sets a question of mental health inside a genre game; the shape of a western is a shelter here. What escaping from reality gives a person is the question at the centre. Alfred Dorfer and John Phillip Law appear in Harald Sicheritz’s eighty six minute Austrian film, completed in 1999.
