What War Dance Is About
Three children from the Patongo displacement camp in northern Uganda leave it for the first time when their school qualifies for the national music competition. Nancy, thirteen, sings in the choir; Rose, fourteen, dances; Dominic, the same age, plays the xylophone. All three are Acholi and all three have had their families broken by the Lord’s Resistance Army. Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine use the contest as a way in and end up filming what the war left inside the children who survived it. The film was nominated for an Academy Award in 2008 and won two Emmys in 2009.
