What Life According to Sam Is About

Progeria is a very rare and fatal genetic condition that accelerates ageing in children, and those who have it often do not reach their mid-teens. The documentary follows Sam Berns and the search for a treatment by his parents, both doctors, across three years. Part of his mother Leslie Gordon’s fight happens not in the laboratory but in publishing: the pool of patients is so small that the study cannot meet standard research criteria, and getting the paper into a serious journal becomes an obstacle of its own. Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine, who also made War Dance, directed it, and it won a Peabody Award.
