We Shall Not Be Moved

Pierre Saint Martin Castellanos's 2024 Mexican film follows an elderly lawyer. Socorro's brother was killed in the Tlatelolco massacre in 1968 and she has been looking for the soldier who pulled the trigger ever since. Fifty years later a clue reaches her and she learns where he is, whereupon she begins preparing to take revenge. The film takes the plan seriously while not hiding her age or her incompetence, moving between tragedy and black comedy. Her family is tired of the obsession and nobody helps her. The matter is less a killing than the personal weight of an event for which no account has been demanded in official history. Luisa Huertas plays the part hard and with humour. Who it's for: viewers who like Mexican cinema and films about political memory. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a measured revenge story; the film turns to comedy often.
