We Will Go

A family cannot hold together; the siblings have not spoken properly in years and everyone has an account to settle with the others. Then the eldest makes a decision and tells them: there will be one last journey, and she has chosen how it ends. The family objects, argues, shouts, and in the end gets into the car. Old matters open along the road, and funny things happen at the same time. Enya Baroux directs and appears in the cast. Hélène Vincent takes the lead, with Pierre Lottin and David Ayala. The subject is the right to die. The narrative does not present it as a debate; it takes the decision as made and describes how the family manages it. The tone sits between comedy and drama, and both are deliberately kept side by side; the funniest scenes are placed next to the heaviest. The road film shape is used: stops, breakdowns, hotel rooms and long conversations in the car. Hélène Vincent plays the part without ever asking for pity; the woman is decided, sardonic and asks nobody's permission. Its limit is predictability; the narrative runs on a familiar line and the last section raises the emotional emphasis. Who it is for: viewers who like French family comedy and road films. Who it is not for: the subject is heavy, the humour is at odds with it in places, and the ending goes where it is expected.
