What Weeds on Fire Is About
In 1980s Hong Kong, two childhood friends join the Shatin Martins, a baseball team put together by their school principal at a school ranked in the lowest band. The team would become the city’s first youth baseball side and the first Hong Kong team to win a league. From that unpromising start the boys move through friendship, first love and decisions that set the rest of their lives, against a city that is changing around them. Steve Chan Chi-fat adapted the true story for his first feature, made with prize money from the government’s First Feature Film Initiative. It screened at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in March 2016 and opened on 25 August, taking 3.8 million Hong Kong dollars on a budget of two million.
