What Weekend of a Champion Is About
The documentary records the weekend on which a world champion driver tries to win the 1971 Monaco Grand Prix. The camera is in the preparations before the race, in the hotel room and at the edge of the track, that is, in places usually not seen from outside. The driver takes the circuit lap by lap, saying what he does at which corner, and the technical side of the work comes out inside the conversation. The account looks less at the result of the race than at how the day of a person doing this work passes. The Formula One world of the period is documented along with it. Jackie Stewart and Roman Polanski appear in Frank Simon’s eighty minute documentary, completed in 1972.
