What Western Is About

Manuel Poirier's road film, set in Brittany. Paco, a Catalan travelling salesman for a shoe firm, picks up Nino, a Russian immigrant hitchhiking, and finds himself at the roadside with the car and everything in it gone. Having lost his job as well, Paco stays on in the town thanks to Marinette, who runs a gift shop and gives him a lift. When he spots Nino in the same town he goes for him and puts him in hospital, and the odd thing is that the friendship starts precisely there. The film sends the two of them off together and builds a calm observation of love, rejection and friendship between men. It took the Jury Prize at Cannes in 1997, carried by Sergi López and Sacha Bourdo.
