Wet Sand

Elene Naveriani's 2022 Georgian film is set in a small village on the Black Sea coast. Eliko is found dead; his granddaughter Moe comes for the funeral and realises she knew nothing of his life. What the film uncovers is a relationship long concealed. Eliko had been with Amnon for more than twenty years, and the village knew without speaking of it; the narrative shows that silence as a kind of agreement. Moe's own situation is the second line. A similar gaze turns on her in the village; the narrative sets the two generations side by side and saves no one. The pace is low and the framing static. Who it's for: those who follow Caucasian cinema and queer-themed drama. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a hopeful close; the film shows violence and exclusion directly.
