What What Happened Was... Is About
What Happened Was, Tom Noonan's directorial debut adapted from his own play, follows a strange first date between two coworkers, played by Noonan and Karen Sillas. It won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival, a unanimous decision from the five person jury, though the film had drawn little attention during the festival and didn't even have a distributor when it won, surprising audiences. Who it's for: anyone curious about a low budget, Sundance award winning two hander carried entirely by a single location and quiet tension. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a sprawling, plot heavy film, since this rests almost entirely on dialogue between two characters.
