What The Wife Is About

Jack and Rita are married and colleagues; both work as therapists and live in a remote house in Vermont, seeing almost nobody. One night Cosmo, one of Jack’s patients, turns up unannounced with his young wife Arlie. Arlie says everything without softening it and wants to know what her husband has been telling them in analysis. As the four of them talk and drink the tension rises; the therapists’ own troubles come out onto the table and it becomes unclear who is treating whom. Tom Noonan both directs and acts in the film he adapted from his own play; Julie Hagerty and Wallace Shawn are in the hundred and one minute American production, completed in 1996.
