What What Is It Worth? Is About
The film sets two times side by side: the order of slavery in eighteenth-century Brazil and the turning of poverty into a line of business in Brazil today. The same actors appear in both periods, and having the two strands mirror each other is the film’s central method. Sérgio Bianchi adapted Machado de Assis’ story Pai Contra Mãe freely and drew on Nireu Cavalcanti’s eighteenth-century records. Its sharp end points at the present, taking aim at some of the non-governmental organisations that make a living from poverty, at the donation economy and at social marketing. In doing so it leaves nobody innocent and gives the viewer no comfort either. Lázaro Ramos, Leona Cavalli, Caio Blat and Zezé Motta are in the cast.
