What's in a Name

One dinner. Vincent announces he will name his unborn son Adolphe and the table comes apart. The argument about a name turns into a fight about history and then into everything nobody has said for years. Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte adapted their own play and co-directed. The film happens almost entirely in one apartment and does not hide where it came from. Patrick Bruel plays Vincent. At the 38th César Awards it took five nominations and won two: Valérie Benguigui for Best Supporting Actress and Guillaume de Tonquédec for Best Supporting Actor. It sold around 3.3 million tickets in France and grossed 29.5 million dollars worldwide on an 11 million budget. The play has been adapted elsewhere too, with Italian and German film versions. Who it is for: viewers who like single-location comedy built on dialogue. Who it is not for: anyone wanting cinema. The film barely alters the stage text and the camera mostly just follows whoever is speaking.
