What's the Time In Your World?

Safi Yazdanian's 2014 Iranian film follows Goli, who returns to her country after years in Paris. In Rasht she meets a man she does not know; he knows an unusual amount about her life, and the reason emerges slowly. The film frames this not as a thriller but as a question about memory. The idea that someone may have carried a version of us we were never aware of, for years, sits at the centre. Leila Hatami and Ali Mosaffa lead. Rasht's rainy, green look, seldom seen in Iranian cinema, is one of the film's defining elements. The pace is calm and the narrative delays its explanation. Who it's for: those who like contemporary Iranian cinema and quiet dramas about memory. Who it's not for: viewers looking for a fast-moving narrative; the film leaves what is being told unclear for a long stretch.
