What When Morning Comes, I Feel Empty Is About
Yuho Ishibashi's 2023 Japanese film follows Nozomi, twenty-four, who has left her job at an advertising agency and now works part-time at a convenience store. The new work is calm and her colleagues are kind; but she cannot tell her parents, and the failure at her old job will not let go of her. The film's interest is in telling not a fall but a pause: nothing is getting worse, nothing is moving forward either. Ishibashi builds this in scenes almost without incident: shop shelves, the night shift, walking the same road. Erika Karata's performance is quiet. The story reaches no conclusion, deliberately; for some viewers it will be too still. Who it's for: viewers who like Japanese independent cinema and stories of everyday life. Who it's not for: anyone wanting incident, or an ending that resolves.
