Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

Karan Johar's family epic and one of the best-known productions in Indian cinema. Yashvardhan Raichand owns a large business and the rule of the house is clear: marriages are made with whoever the family approves. When Rahul, the adopted elder son, falls in love with Anjali from a poor part of Delhi, his father disowns him. Rahul leaves for London with his wife. In the second half his younger brother Rohan sets out to find him and put the family back together. The cast was made up of the biggest names of the period: Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor. Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan are married in life as well. It was a large success outside India too, becoming the highest-earning Indian film abroad to that point and entering the top of the box office in Britain in its opening week. It runs close to three and a half hours, with an interval. One of the peaks of the genre for anyone who loves Bollywood melodrama, dance and enormous feeling. For a viewer who wants restraint, the film opens every emotion to its limit, and even while criticising paternal authority it sanctifies it.
