What Where To? Is About
A family lives in a poor village in the Lebanese mountains. One day the father leaves them and goes to Brazil, which in those years promised wealth to many Lebanese. Twenty years pass; the mother raises the children with great difficulty, the elder son has a family of his own and the younger is preparing to leave for Brazil himself. One day a ragged old man arrives in the village and nobody recognises him. Georges Nasser’s seventy eight minute Lebanese film is about what emigration leaves behind and shows that a return is not always a reunion. It was completed in 1957 and was the first Lebanese film to compete at Cannes.
