What Whisky Romeo Zulú Is About
On 31 August 1999 a LAPA aircraft ran off the runway in the middle of Buenos Aires during take-off and caught fire. The film tells not the crash itself but what came before it: the maintenance records, the gaps in training, the way warnings were swallowed. The narrator is a pilot who worked inside the company and pressed the question of safety. Enrique Piñeyro wrote the film, directed it and played the lead. He flew for the same airline from 1988 to 1999 and resigned two months before the crash, objecting to its safety policy. The title comes from the tail code of the aircraft that went down. The telling does not turn the crash into a spectacle; it asks how it became possible.
