What Whispering Smith Is About

Smith is a detective for the railroad, sent to stop a gang robbing trains. The hard part is that he becomes more and more convinced his old friend and colleague Murray joined that gang after being fired. Murray's wife is also somewhere in it. Paramount sold the film as Alan Ladd's first western and his first picture in colour, and audiences took to the shift from urban crime pictures into the genre. Robert Preston plays Murray; Leslie Fenton directed. The railhead town built for it on the Paramount lot became the studio's standard western town and was used in other productions for years.
