What White Irish Drinkers Is About
Working-class Brooklyn, 1975. Two brothers share a house with a violent father and a mother who means well and can do nothing, and their days turn on small-time crime. Danny, the older one, decides the only exit is a single score, and times it around the chaos of a huge concert night. Brian, the younger, has a talent he has told nobody about: he draws. John Gray builds the whole film on the tension between loyalty and escape, between staying with your brother and taking your own way out. Karen Allen and Stephen Lang carry the parents. The narrowness of the neighbourhood never makes the characters small, it just leaves them with fewer options.
