What White Squall Is About
In the early 1960s a group of boys attend school aboard a sailing ship, training at sea for a year. The captain is hard on them and trusts them. The film gives its first hour entirely to life on the ship; the narrative is really about learning to be a crew, and the storm arrives as the test of it. After that it turns into a courtroom film and leaves the question of responsibility open. Ridley Scott directed, with Jeff Bridges in the lead. It draws on a school ship that really sank in 1961. Before watching: there is a sea disaster with deaths and the sequence is held for a long time. Do not come to it expecting a straightforward youth adventure.
