The film shows the collapse slowly and quietly: the rules do not fall at once but are enforced a little less each time. Peter Brook left the boys largely to improvise and used no professional actors; much of the film was cut together from what they actually did. It is adapted from William Golding's novel, shot in black and white, and screened at Cannes. A real warning: the film shows violence between children and two deaths.
