What The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade Is About
The asylum at Charenton, 1808. The Marquis de Sade is held there, and the director of the institution allows him to stage a play; the actors will be patients and the audience will be polite society from outside. The subject of the play is the killing of Jean Paul Marat in his bath fifteen years earlier. As the rehearsals proceed the line between the play and the patients' own condition disappears. Peter Brook directs. Patrick Magee plays Sade, Ian Richardson plays Marat and Glenda Jackson plays Charlotte Corday. The source is Peter Weiss's play of 1963. The film is not a record of Brook's Royal Shakespeare Company production but a version reshot for cinema with the same cast; the shoot was completed very quickly. The argument at the centre is between two characters: Marat holds that the revolution must continue, Sade that every political act disregards the suffering of the individual. The narrative takes no side. Brook's idea of theatre is directly visible: the actors use their bodies to the limit, the camera stands inside the crowd, and the viewer is never left comfortable. Glenda Jackson became known through this part and her career opened from it. It is a work argued over in the histories of both theatre and film; whether it is a record or an adaptation is still discussed. Who it is for: viewers who like films rooted in theatre and work built on political thought. Who it is not for: it is dense and wordy, the form is demanding, and it deliberately sets out to disturb.
