White Sun

Young Pooja lives with her mother in a village in Nepal. Though her grandfather’s death has saddened her, inside she is excited, because she is about to meet the man she hopes may be her father. Chandra is a former Maoist guerrilla returning home after a decade of civil conflict, and when he comes to the village the reckoning of the past comes with him. Old resentments among the people gathered for the funeral surface at once. The film says that declaring a war over does not put an end to the divisions between people. The funeral itself stands at the centre of the account, and it is there that who has the right to do what is argued over. Dayahang Rai plays the lead in Deepak Rauniyar’s eighty seven minute Nepali film, completed in 2016.
