What Who Are You, Polly Maggoo? Is About
The photographer William Klein's 1966 French film is a satire aimed at the fashion world. The American model Polly Maggoo tells a television crew about her dreams and her expectation of a prince while fending off the men pressing around her. The film imitates fashion shoots, television programmes and advertisements in order to rot their language from inside. Klein was a fashion photographer, which explains both the film's knowledge and its anger: the absurdities shown are not invented but exaggerated realities. The metal-dress show that opens the film is among the best-known scenes of fashion criticism in cinema. The story is episodic and inconsistent, deliberately so, though it also weakens the film's momentum. Who it's for: viewers who like 1960s French cinema, criticism of fashion and formal experiment. Who it's not for: anyone wanting narrative flow, or who will find a structure that keeps changing register scattered.
