What Muhammad Ali, the Greatest Is About
The photographer William Klein was inside the rooms where Muhammad Ali’s legend was built, and he kept his camera running there. The first section was shot in 1964 and 1965, when a young and voluble Cassius Clay beat Sonny Liston, the world heavyweight champion everyone thought unbeatable, and the manner of the win together with his personality made him a star overnight. Klein stayed with the camp through the rematch period, watching at close range as Clay became Muhammad Ali and turned much of the American public against him with his commitment to Islam. The second section moves to Zaire in 1974, where Ali faces another supposedly invincible champion in George Foreman and takes the crown a second time. The hundred and twenty three minute French documentary is far more interested in Ali and his era than in the fights, with Malcolm X, Norman Mailer and the Beatles passing through.
