Chen Hsin-tai What Who'll Stop the Rain Is About
Su I-hsuan's 2023 Taiwanese film is set during the student protests of 1994. Martial law has only recently ended and a strike is under way at the university over freedom of expression. Chi-wei, who joins the strike, is drawn to Ching, the girlfriend of the strike's leader. The film does not make the political struggle a backdrop; the narrative takes up the hierarchy inside the movement and the position of women within it at once. The cast are young and unknown. The period detail is careful. The tone is tense. Who it's for: viewers of Taiwanese cinema and queer narratives. Who it's not for: viewers unfamiliar with the politics of the period; the film explains little context.
