What Why? Is About
A group of young Sparta Prague supporters travelling to an away match wreck a railway carriage on the way to Banská Bystrica, threaten the other passengers, and try to throw the Slovak conductress out of the window when she objects. Karel Smyczek built the film on a real incident, from a script by the journalist Radek John. The action is repeatedly cut against police interviews and courtroom statements, so that it works at once as a brawl to watch and as a document. The question in the title sits in that gap: not who threw the punch, but why any of it was done at all. It played in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 1988.
