Stephen Chbosky's 2017 film follows Auggie, born with a facial difference, as he starts school. Until then he had been taught at home. The film proceeds by changing its point of view. His sister, his friend and his classmates each get their own section; the narrative thereby avoids reducing the matter to one person's pain and shows that those around him carry their own weight. It is adapted from a novel. Jacob Tremblay and Julia Roberts appear. The tone is optimistic and the conflicts are not harsh. Who it's for: those who like family drama and school stories. Who it's not for: viewers uncomfortable with emotional emphasis; the film uses it openly.
