Julian finds love in the last place he would have looked for it, the Najayo prison in the Dominican Republic. Yanelly is held in the adjacent block, and the two of them communicate through barred windows using a sign language the prisoners devised themselves. The title comes from that practice: in prison slang the men who send messages across to the women are called woodpeckers. Jose Maria Cabral shot inside real prisons with real inmates filling most of the background, so the place never once reads as a set. It was the first Dominican film to compete at Sundance.
