What Kind Hearts and Coronets Is About
A man cast out by his family decides to kill, one by one, the eight relatives standing between him and a title. We hear it from the memoir he is writing in a condemned cell. The famous trick is that one actor plays all eight relatives, but the real feat is tone: the murders are recounted with cool good manners, and you find yourself seated on the killer's side without noticing. Alec Guinness takes the eight roles, though the film belongs to Dennis Price. It counts as the hardest comedy the Ealing studio made. Before watching: the ending was altered for American release. Most circulating versions now carry the original British close, but it is worth checking which print you have.
