What Pink String and Sealing Wax Is About
In Brighton in 1880, a publican’s wife works on the timid son of a domineering pharmacist and gets him to steal strychnine so she can be rid of her drunken husband. It was the first film Robert Hamer directed alone, and Googie Withers, as the wife, holds every ounce of its energy. Ealing produced it, adapted from Roland Pertwee’s play of the same name. The title comes from the Victorian pharmacist’s practice of tying a parcel with pink string and closing it with sealing wax, a seal showing the package had not been opened. That seal is more or less what the film is about: who in a household is actually holding things shut.
