What Working Woman Is About
Michal Aviad’s film follows Orna, a mother of three who takes a job as assistant to a powerful real estate developer while her husband struggles to keep his restaurant open. Her boss’s attention begins as flattery and becomes harassment, and the film puts its weight exactly there: how a woman pushes back without losing the job, the income and the domestic balance that have all come to depend on him. Aviad never turns a scene into a courtroom, keeping the whole thing inside ordinary working life, which is where this is hardest to name and hardest to walk away from. Liron Ben-Shlush won the Israeli Film Academy’s best actress award for it, and it screened at Toronto in 2018.
