What World's Greatest Dad Is About
A high school teacher who writes novels nobody publishes barely gets on with his unlikeable son. One night he finds the boy dead and decides to present it as something else. He writes a fake journal, and the school falls in love with it. The film builds this not as a weepie but as a hard satire on how grief gets captured; its real cruelty is aimed not at the dead boy but at the crowd that suddenly loves him. Bobcat Goldthwait wrote and directed. It counts among Robin Williams's strangest parts. Before watching: there is a death early on, and suicide and teenage sexuality are used as comic material throughout. Do not come to the tone unprepared.
