What Yellow Flowers On the Green Grass Is About
Two brothers are growing up in a town in Vietnam: Thieu and his younger brother Tuong. Both of them are drawn to a girl in the neighbourhood, and Thieu cannot bear it. The jealousy grows by the day. The village floods, the crops are lost and the poverty deepens. The tension between the brothers rises at the same rate. Victor Vũ directed the film from a widely read novel by Nguyễn Nhật Ánh, and it was among the most watched productions in Vietnam that year. The telling does not prettify childhood; jealousy, hunger and remorse stand in the same frame. The rural landscape comes forward in the images. The film was submitted as Vietnam's Oscar entry.
