What You're Out of Your Mind, Madicken Is About
Madicken is the older daughter of a comfortable Swedish family, growing up during the First World War in a country that stayed out of it. With her little sister Lisabet she keeps inventing ideas nobody sane would have, including jumping off a roof with an umbrella, falls in and out with the neighbours, and lands in trouble every time. Nothing catastrophic happens; a child is simply learning the world by testing it. It comes from Astrid Lindgren's Madicken books, and Lindgren wrote the screenplay herself. Goran Graffman had actually shot a television series, and this feature was cut together from those episodes. The unhurried tone Swedish children's cinema is known for is all here: the children are never made small, and the adults are never made heroic.
