You're Telling Me!

In Erle C. Kenton’s 1934 pre-Code comedy, W. C. Fields plays Sam Bisbee, an inventor whose work has produced nothing but poverty, the keyhole finder for drunks being a representative example. His daughter is in love with the son of the town’s most self-satisfied family. His puncture-proof tyre is about to make him when circumstances destroy it, and his attempt at suicide is thwarted by another of his own inventions, at which point he decides to keep living. It is a remake of Fields’s 1926 silent So’s Your Old Man, both of them taken from a Julian Street story, and its best-known passage is the long golf routine he had been performing for years.
