You're Ugly Too

Mark Noonan's first feature is set in the Irish midlands. After her mother dies, Stacey, who is eleven, is taken in by her uncle Will, paroled from prison in order to look after her, and the two of them start living together in a caravan park. They do not know each other; both have things in their past that go unspoken, and rather than explaining them one by one the film watches two people learn to live side by side. The humour is dry and sparing and there is no emotional eruption. The distance between Lauren Kinsella and Aidan Gillen sets the whole measure of the film. It premiered in Berlin, where it was nominated for a Crystal Bear and for best first feature, and it ends without promising a resolution.
