Mysskin's 2011 Tamil film follows an officer investigating a strange series of murders in the city. Severed limbs are found in different places, and as the inquiry proceeds it emerges that the cases are connected. The film also takes the detective's own situation as a subject. His sister is missing, and the two lines intersect at the end; the narrative withholds information and keeps the killer's reasoning for the final section. Mysskin's visual language is distinct: low angles, long corridors and silence. Cheran leads. The violence is hard but unshowy, and the narrative questions whether justice can be reached through institutions. Who it's for: those who like Tamil detective films and formally distinctive directors. Who it's not for: viewers for whom images of dismembered bodies would sit heavily.
