Zaki Chan

Zaki Chan, directed by Wael Ehsan, is an Egyptian comedy starring Ahmed Helmy as a lazy young man who clumsily takes a bodyguard job to protect his father's boss's children, especially the stubborn daughter Shereen. The film's title is a direct play on Jackie Chan; "Zaki," a common Egyptian name, stands in for "Jackie," and part of the joke is giving a physically weak, incompetent character such a grandiose action star name. The film is counted among the works that cemented Yasmin Abdulaziz's standing in Egyptian cinema. Who it's for: anyone curious about an Egyptian comedy that takes its name directly from Jackie Chan, built around the comic contrast of a physically inept character carrying an exaggerated action star name. Who it's not for: those wanting real fight choreography or action sequences, since the film uses that reference as a deliberately ironic contrast instead.
